RACINE — Officials are investigating the death of a 51-year-old Racine County Jail inmate. He died Wednesday night.
Correctional officers received an emergency alarm from one of the cells at 7 p.m., according to a news release from the Racine County Sheriff’s Department.
A jail nurse and correctional officers attempted to get a response from the man, Samuel Lee Wilson of Racine, and administered CPR. Racine paramedics also responded to the call and transported the man to Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints hospital, 3801 Spring St.
Wilson was pronounced dead at 8 p.m. at the hospital, the release said.
Wilson had been in the jail since Nov. 13 for violating his probation, Racine County Sheriff Robert Carlson said.
The staff was not aware of any pre-existing medical conditions before the emergency call and the cause of death is under investigation, Carlson said.
An autopsy is scheduled for today and is part of a complete investigation of Wilson's death, he said.
An investigation is always conducted when an inmate dies, Carlson said. The investigation, which is conducted by the county medical examiner, Sheriff’s Department and jail management, will look at the cause of death and response time, Carlson said.
The sheriff believes staff handled everything properly, he said.
“When you have over 700 people in one location, you are talking about a small village. Sometimes they have something happen while they just happen to be in jail,” Carlson said.
In May a baby, Emagine Armanie Turner, died after her mother, County Jail inmate Melissa Woten, went into premature labor. An investigation from the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department found that the jail staff was not at fault, but the state’s investigation has not yet been finalized, Carlson said.
Todd Anderson, 43, of Burlington also died in the jail this year. He died Sept. 19. The medical examiner determined he died of natural causes.
In Kenosha County on Wednesday, Jose E. Leon-Colon, 42, and an inmate at the Kenosha County Jail, died from injuries he sustained after he hung himself Monday in a medical unit at the jail, a Sheriff’s department officer said.
