RACINE COUNTY - Speeches, parades and services are planned this weekend to honor those who gave their lives serving their country.
This Monday is Memorial Day, and these services and processions have been planned in Racine County in observance:
- Friday - A Memorial Day program with local veteran groups and a color guard will be held at 1 p.m. at St. Monica's Senior Citizens Home, 3920 N. Green Bay Road.
- Sunday - American Legion Essman-Schroeder Post 20 from Waterford will visit the Rochester Cemetery at noon. Bouquets of flowers will be placed on the graves of veterans.
- Sunday - American Legion Bixby-Hansen Post 171 of Union Grove will hold its annual pilgrimage to area cemeteries by the Honor Guard, beginning at 8 a.m.
- Monday - American Legion Bixby-Hansen Post 171 of Union Grove will hold a Memorial Day program and procession at 9:15 a.m. at American Legion Memorial Park, Seventh and Main streets, Union Grove.
- Monday - The annual Rochester Memorial Day Parade begins at approximately 1:30 p.m. at the Rochester Fire Station on Highway FF. Those wishing to be in the parade are to be at the fire station at 1 p.m. The parade will proceed from the fire station following Highway FF to State Street. From State Street it will proceed north to Main Street, then east to Front Street and head south to end at Highway FF.
A program will follow the parade at Pioneer Park, southeast corner of highways D and W.
- Monday - Organized by the Racine Area Veterans Council, the Racine Memorial Day Parade steps off promptly at 10 a.m. at West Boulevard and Washington Avenue and will end with a memorial ceremony at Graceland Cemetery's Veterans Memorial, shortly after 11 a.m.
- Monday - The Catholic Cemetery Association of Racine Inc. will hold a Memorial Day Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1500 Erie St.
- Monday - The Burlington Memorial Day Parade and ceremony begins at 9 a.m. at the intersection of Wainwright Avenue and Kane Street and ends at the Veterans Memorial Building. The program in the park begins at 10:15 a.m. and lasts about one hour.
- Monday - American Legion Harvey Funk Post 494, Caledonia, will conduct Memorial Day services with a rifle salute at several cemeteries. For details, see The Journal Times' Out and About section from May 21.
- Monday - American Legion Essman-Schroeder Post 20, Waterford, will hold services at several cemeteries. See The Journal Times' Out and About section from May 21 for details.
Memorial Day Closings
Government offices: Most offices closed Monday.
Mail: No delivery Monday and post offices closed.
Bus: No service Monday.
Financial institutions: Most closed Monday.
The Journal Times: Office closed Monday. For a missed newspaper, call (262) 634-3322 between 6:30 and 10:30 a.m.
Garbage: No pick up Monday. Monday collection on Tuesday, Tuesday on Wednesday, Wednesday on Thursday, Thursday on Friday and Friday on Saturday.
