YORKVILLE - This ought to resolve the dilemma of whether to head to the Racine County Fair or just play video games. How about both?

For the first time, fair organizers plan to hold a contest based on the "Rock Band 2" video game. Up to 25 bands will be

allowed to compete on the Nintendo Wii console, with the winning band earning $400. It's scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 1 on the new Runzheimer International stage at the west end of the fairgrounds. That's at the same time country star Sara Evans is scheduled to perform on the grandstand.

"While Mom and Dad might be country fans, the kids may not be," said Randy Vosberg, chairman of the fair's free stage committee. "Or they might not want to be with Mom and Dad."

That's one of a few changes designed to bring in a younger crowd to supplement the stalwart fairgoers. With attendance at a rodeo event declining, organizers added a second motocross event. The judged freestyle jump-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. July 30 at the grandstand joins an existing stunt show that runs daily.

"We're just trying to get a broader spectrum of people," said Tammy Brever, who co-chairs the entertainment

committee.

Other new events include an interactive game show for kids and a Bengal tiger show. In addition, cars won't be the only vehicles marked for demolition on the track. A combine demolition derby is scheduled after the opening night tractor pull July 29.

"They're like big monsters lumbering around the track, bashing into each other," Brever said, describing it as "good, clean redneck fun."

Evans is the headliner after accommodating the fair's budget, Brever said. Fair officials tried to land Rodney Atkins, but Country Thunder signed him to play last weekend. Festivals typically don't allow musicians to play anywhere else nearby for a certain number of days, Brever said.

Entries in most 4-H animal categories are roughly the same as last year, but interest in some others like photography is rising, said Jill Saltzmann, the head fair clerk. She attributes that to the popularity of digital cameras.
