SALEM - A 75-year-old man died Friday morning after he became trapped in the basement of a home during a fire.
Robert J. Twomey of Illinois was staying at the house at 28640 113th St. temporarily due to an illness. He called 911 at 9 a.m. Friday to alert authorities that the house was on fire and he was stuck inside, according to Kenosha County sheriff's deputies.
Reports said Twomey said he was trapped in the basement and the door was too hot for him to get out.
Firefighters from the Salem Fire Department arrived on the scene and saw smoke pouring from the house. They were able to rescue Twomey from the house before it became fully engulfed in flames.
Rescue personnel initiated CPR on Twomey and then transported him to St. Catherine's Hospital in Pleasant Prairie. He died a short time later.
Salem Fire Department Chief Mike Slover said the fire does not appear to be suspicious and may have been caused by a heating unit in the residence.
Twomey was the only person in the home at the time. However, sheriff's deputies said a family dog was also killed in the fire.
Fire departments from Bristol, Wheatland and Randall, along with the Racine Fire Bells, responded to the fire.
Sheriff's detectives along with the State Fire Marshal will conduct an investigation due to Twomey's death.
