RACINE - Former mayor Gary Becker's wife was granted a divorce.

Julie A. Fischer-Becker filed for divorce from her husband Jan. 20, one week after his arrest in an Internet sex sting by a state agent who had posed online as a teenage girl. The then-mayor had allegedly gone to Brookfield Square Mall to meet with the teenager and was taken into custody.

Gary Becker faces charges of attempted sexual assault of a child, child enticement, possession of child pornography and misconduct in public office. His alleged criminal activity was discovered when he reportedly asked city workers to repair his personal computer.

The divorce became final Sept. 29, after a hearing with Deputy Family Court Commissioner Julie Pasteur. The judgment of divorce was filed this week. The two were married for 28 years.

Becker resigned as mayor on Jan. 20, the same day his wife filed for divorce. Becker is working as a legal assistant at Becker, French & DeMatthew, 822 Wisconsin Ave., according to documents filed with the court.

Becker's criminal case is still open. He is due in court Tuesday for a status conference. The judge and attorneys are likely to set a timetable to hear evidence on additional motions filed by both sides before the case would move toward trial.
