RACINE - City residents could soon be allowed to raise the roofs on their garages.
A current city ordinance prohibits detached sheds and garages from measuring taller than 15 feet above the ground. But a newly proposed ordinance would raise that limit so that garages could be up to 20 feet, said 11th District Alderman Greg Helding.
Someone with a standard 15-foot house would not be able to build a 20-foot detached garage, but someone with a two- or three-story house could build up to a 20-foot garage, as long as it did not exceed 75 percent of the house's height, according to the new ordinance. The ordinance does not apply to garages which are attached to houses.
The City Plan Commission approved the city creating a new ordinance Wednesday. But it still needs to go to City Council and then back to the commission to finalize wording of the new ordinance.
