UNION GROVE - Students in the Union Grove Elementary District will have another choice for breakfast beginning next semester - where to eat.
In addition to home, students soon will be able to get a light breakfast at school.
Gary Damaschke, administrator for the K-8 district, said the program will help parents pressed for time in getting their kids off to school and those students who are missing breakfast.
Available on the menu will be cereals, fruit, milk and perhaps a warm entree from time to time.
The cost for meals on this program will be approximately $1. Students whose families meet income requirements will be eligible for free or reduced price meals, just as they do for lunches.
Meals will be prepared by the district's own commissary staff, not an outside contractor.
Damaschke said the district staff also is considering tutoring or other programs to accompany the before-school breakfast program.
4-year-old kindergarten program considered
UNION GROVE - The Union Grove Elementary District again is discussing the possibility of establishing a 4-year-old kindergarten program.
"The impetus is there and studies have shown it's good for kids," said Gary Damaschke, administrator of the K-8 district. "Hillary (Clinton) is talking about universal 4K as part of her platform."
Should the district pursue its non-mandatory program for the 2008-2009 school year, it would likely be offered off site, Damaschke said. The district would contract with local day care facilities to hold the programs there. By doing that, Damaschke said, parents would have the option of having their children in prekindergarten for half a day and traditional day care the other half.
The district would provide certified teachers for the program, or reimburse certified employees of local child care facilities.
Damaschke said those families qualifying for free or reduced lunch programs also would be eligible for breaks in the prekindergarten program.
Airport to get new terminal
YORKVILLE - The Yorkville Town Board and Plan Commission earlier this month approved a request from Sylvania Aviation to construct a new terminal building at Sylvania Airport, 2624 Sylvania Ave. (west Interstate 94 frontage road).
The new building would house flight base operations and maintenance equipment. The new structure would replace an older structure which management has deemed too costly to repair.
