BURLINGTON - Samantha Bangert left some enduring impressions with the staff and customers at Burlington Brewing Co. - her "goofy" sense of humor and a mighty fine grilled cheese sandwich.

Bangert, 22, of Rochester, was killed early Saturday morning in a crash on Highway W near the Browns Lake Golf Course in the Town of Burlington.

Tom Terry, the Racine County medical examiner, said Bangert was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which was reported at 2:32 a.m. about a mile south of Highway A on the west side of Browns Lake. Terry said Bangert's northbound Chevrolet Malibu apparently slid on the icy roads and was T-boned by a southbound Chevrolet Avalanche driven by Brent D. Whiteside, 32, of 318 Margaret Court, Burlington.

The impact resulted in fatal head and neck trauma.

The Racine County Sheriff's Department said Whiteside and three occupants of the Avalanche received minor,

nonlife-threatening injuries.

Bangert was apparently on her way home from her job at Burlington Brewing, 217 N. Pine St., Terry said. Amanda Bigelow, a bartender there, said Bangert, a culinary arts student at Milwaukee Area Technical College, worked as a cook at the pub and restaurant.

"She had this thing where she could just make everyone laugh," said Bigelow, who had worked with Bangert since the spring when the business opened. "She was just a goofball. She always tried to stay positive."

Bigelow said Bangert, a Waterford High School graduate, was getting field experience to help her studies.

The Sheriff's Department said the crash was still under investigation. Whiteside was cited for operating while intoxicated; the case will be referred to the district attorney for consideration of other charges.

Terry said there was no apparent sign of intoxication on Bangert's part.

Responding to the scene along with sheriff's deputies were Town of Burlington police and fire units, Burlington Rescue Squad crews and City of Burlington police.

Funeral services for Bangert will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home, 625 Browns Lake Drive, Burlington. Visitation with the family will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bangert's survivors include her parents, Donald and Michele Bangert of Rochester; sisters Kristen Bangert of Mukwonago and Sarah Bangert of Burlington; and grandmother Nancy Cooney of Menominee, Mich.
