Investigators plan to return to the scene of a fire today that destroyed a Wind Lake home on Sunday morning.

Firefighters from several departments in Racine County raced to 26005 S. Wind Lake Road around 10:30 a.m. and found a single-family, ranch-style home with its garage engulfed in flames.

The fire was also spreading into the home's living-room area, said Wind Lake Assistant Fire Chief Rob Robbins.

The homeowner was already out of the house, but he was taken to Waukesha Memorial Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Some neighbors reported hearing explosions during the fire.

According to Robbins, shortly after firefighters arrived, heat from the blaze caused a thermal-pane window in the living room to blow out. Shortly after that, the rear tires of the occupant's mini van blew out, and Robbins said he thinks three gas cans in the garage also exploded.

Each house on either side of the fire scene was evacuated during the blaze as a precaution until the fire was brought under control.

Robbins said the house sustained an estimated $400,000 in damage to the structure and contents and will likely be a total loss. It's unclear how the fire started, but the Racine County Fire Investigation Task Force expects to visit the scene again today, he said.

The Tichigan, Raymond, Muskego, Tess Corners and Waterford fire departments and Wind Lake and Waterford rescue crews responded to the fire.
