RACINE - Educators Credit Union announced Friday that it has donated 33 computers to the Racine Unified School District to replace computers that were stolen from several schools earlier this fall.

Nearly 70 computers were stolen from five Unified schools over a two-month period.

Racine police are still investigating the computer heists from Giese, Wadewitz and Jerstad-Agerholm elementary schools and McKinley Middle School that netted some 68 computers. The loss is estimated at more than $60,000. No arrests have been made.

"We were very sorry to hear about the burglaries that happened in some of the Racine Unified schools this fall," Credit Union President Eugene Szymczak said in a statement. "We understand the importance of having good technology and equipment to help maximize student learning."

Giese was hit twice in less than a month and lost 24 computers, and the burglars somehow managed to get 30 computers and video editing equipment out of McKinley without getting caught. In several of the cases, the suspects broke into separate classrooms by breaking and entering windows.

"We are very strong believers that a strong education system is the key to success and growth in our communities. It is our hope that this donation will help make a difference in student learning and encourage greater support to student education in our community," Szymczak said.

In recent weeks, Racine Unified has worked with the Racine Police Department and implemented heightened security at all district buildings. Racine Unified is also exploring improved ways to protect against computer thefts and recover computers that have been stolen.

"Racine Unified would like to thank Educators Credit Union for this generous donation. The donation is an incredible example of community support and caring about student's learning," said Unified Superintendent James Shaw. "Educators Credit Union has been a long time supporter of public education and this donation will return instructional technology to the classrooms from which it was taken."
