MOUNT PLEASANT - Village trustee Jim Chaplin will not run for re-election this spring.

He was appointed to the board in 2006 to fill a vacancy and was re-elected the following year. Chaplin, 68, said he's considering a move to Virginia, something he has planned since his retirement from Racine Federated in 2000.

"It's impossible to do that in this job," he said.

Turning down re-election was a tough decision because he has thoroughly enjoyed the work, Chaplin said. He pointed to the creation of tax incremental districts as one of the board's top accomplishments while he was in office, as well as a consolidation of fire services with Sturtevant.

Because his paperwork announcing his plans to leave office was filed after the Dec. 26 deadline, other candidates for the trustee positions have three extra days to file their paperwork. The deadline is Friday, Jan. 9. The board seats are all at-large, meaning they represent the entire village rather than a specific segment.
