BURLINGTON - A husband and wife from Racine both managed to get arrested for operating the same vehicle while intoxicated, within 40 minutes of each other Sunday afternoon.

City of Burlington police arrested Jessica Cody, 34, 29 Oregon St., Racine, on pending charges of her second offense of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, her second offense of operating while suspended and bail jumping.

Town of Burlington police arrested Justin A, Cody, 27, of the same Racine address, for his second offense of operating while intoxicated and for operating after suspended.

The situation began when two teenagers called city police a 3:15 p.m. to report they were following a White Toyota 4Runner whose female driver appeared to be impaired.

The witnesses said that on more than one occasion the suspect vehicle crossed the center line of various streets and almost caused several crashes and near side swipes of parked vehicles. The witnesses said that twice the woman driver got out her vehicle, walked over to the teens' vehicle, rapped on the window and allegedly told the witnesses that she was a cop on a drug bust.

City police caught up with the vehicle at the Marathon service station at Jefferson and Pine streets and took Jessica Cody into custody.

Jessica Cody was taken to Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington, 252 McHenry St., for a blood draw and later was placed into a cell at the city police station to await transport to the Racine County Jail.

After the arrest of Jessica Cody, police reports indicate that Justin Cody walked to the Police Department lobby, just a block east of the Marathon station.

While he was waiting in the lobby, the witnesses to the reckless driving complaint showed up at the station to speak with officers. They told police they just saw Justin Cody allegedly get into the driver seat of the 4Runner and drive off. Apparently he had his own set of keys, as police had taken Jessica Cody's keys.

An all-points bulletin was issued and a Town of Burlington police officer located the vehicle at Pine and Washington streets in Downtown Burlington, where the vehicle allegedly failed to stop for a stop sign. The officer stopped the vehicle a short distance away at the McDonald's restaurant at Jefferson and Dodge streets. A Racine County Sheriff's deputy assisted town police with the arrest of Justin Cody.
