Victim feared for her life
CALEDONIA - A woman's faith may have helped her escape death in a storage unit Monday night, in a plot that shares eerie similarities with the Teri Jendusa-Nicolai case in 2004.
Caledonia police reported Tuesday night that the 32-year-old woman who was the target in the apparent kidnapping/murder plot was uninjured, but very scared, following her Monday night abduction. Police said she is staying at an undisclosed, safe location.
Her alleged abductor remained at large as of Tuesday night, said Lt. Keith Ennis, an investigator with the Caledonia Police Department. Police are asking for the community's help in locating Wendell Brooks Jr., 32, of 1843 Woodland Ave., Racine.
Brooks was charged Tuesday with attempted first-degree homicide, kidnapping, recklessly endangering safety and intimidation of a victim. He is considered armed and dangerous.
According to police and a criminal complaint filed Tuesday in Racine County Circuit Court, Brooks allegedly used the ruse of needing a jump for his vehicle's battery to lure the victim out of her residence at 7 p.m. Monday to a secluded area near Park High School.
Brooks appeared to hook up jumper cables to his truck, but never got into the vehicle. A few minutes later, he asked the victim to take him to a storage facility in Caledonia to get a battery charger.
At the storage facility, Brooks allegedly drew a gun on the victim and then used plastic cable to secure her hands and legs and told her that he was "sick and tired of her trying to leave."
While Brooks allegedly held the victim at bay and threatened her with the gun, she said she begged Brooks not to harm her, prayed out loud and repeatedly quoted scripture.
She eventually was able to convince Brooks to cut her ties and was able to get a phone from Brooks to call a pastor to ask if they could come over for counseling.
The victim said they then drove to Brooks' mother's house in Racine, where Brooks had earlier left their 2-year-old son. The victim told police she was able to convince Brooks to go into the house to retrieve a pacifier for the child.
Once Brooks was inside the house, the victim fled from the area in the car to another Racine location where police were called.
The victim told police that there was no doubt in her mind that Brooks intended to kill her.
On Tuesday morning, police found evidence at the storage unit that seems to spell out criminal intent. A letter was found in the unit that spelled out steps to take in raping and murdering the victim, placing her body in a container and filling the container with cement.
"This is domestic abuse to the nth degree," Ennis said.
Ennis said local police searched for Brooks late Monday and Tuesday. Search warrants were executed at locations in Racine, Mount Pleasant and Caledonia.
More evidence was found Monday night in the victim's vehicle in Racine.
Anyone with information should contact Caledonia police at (262) 835-4423.
Jendusa-Nicolai was kidnapped from her Wind Lake home on Feb. 1, 2004, by her former husband, beaten and put in a garbage can that was left in storage unit in Illinois. Police found her after tracing leads from David M. Larsen's wallet that lead to the storage unit near Palwaukee Municipal Airport in Wheeling, Ill. Larsen was eventually convicted on federal and state charges in the kidnapping and attempted murder.
