RACINE COUNTY - When Steve Pfund heard his last name on TV during a story about Fort Hood shooting victims, he immediately thought of his son stationed at the Texas army base.

"We were terrified," said Pfund, 48, of Sturtevant. "Of course we couldn't get a hold of him and we were on pins and needles."

The Pfund on TV was the mother of one of the victims, who is likely a distant cousin, Steve said Thursday.

The victim, 19-year-old Amber Bahr, was shot in the stomach; she was listed in stable condition Thursday night. She is originally from Random Lake and has family there with the Pfund last name.

Pfund said his son, Steven, 23, is OK and that he spoke to him on the phone at about 5 p.m. Thursday.

"He could just talk a minute," Steve Pfund said. "He was a block down the street (from the shooting). He could see and hear the sirens going crazy."

Steven Pfund, part of the 40th Engine Battalion, did not know Bahr well but met her two weeks ago on the base when they realized they had family with the same name and were likely related, Steve Pfund said.

Steven Pfund was not the only local man at the base Thursday, where an attack left 12 people dead and 31 wounded. Former Wind Lake resident Jonathan Scheel is also stationed at Fort Hood.

Scheel is fine, said his mom, Alexis, of Caledonia, Thursday afternoon. She spoke to her 21-year-old son after she heard about the shootings, which happened at about 1:30 p.m.

"I was in the process of calling him and he called me. I left my phone in the car and I'm panicking looking for it," she said. "He's fine. Thank God."

Alexis Scheel, 39, said her son found out about the shootings when a lockdown announcement was made at the base.

"They locked down the fort and told everyone, 'Go to your offices now,' " Alexis Scheel said.

That's what her son, an infantryman, did; he remained under lockdown for several hours, she said.
