RAYMOND - The Town Board has called a special meeting for tonight to seek public authorization to change the treasurer position from elected to appointed. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. at Raymond Town Hall, 2255 S. 76th St.
The board voted unanimously Aug. 9 to propose the change to residents, who will get to vote on the proposal tonight.
The change would allow Treasurer Karen Kastenson to continue to serve both as treasurer and hold an accounting position with the town. State law prevents an elected official from making more than $5,000 as a town employee - a salary that Kastenson's role as treasurer and accountant would exceed.
Kastenson also serves as a deputy clerk for the town.
The town's attorney told the board in August that many municipalities are moving toward an appointed treasurer position because it helps ensure that they get a qualified person, the meeting minutes state.
