RAYMOND

Man steers clear of potential fraud

Careful consideration by a 27-year-old Raymond man may have kept him from becoming the victim of a fraud.

The man, who resides in the 5000 block of W. 7 Mile Road, had made arrangements to sell a 1995 Yamaha ATV to another party via Craigslist on the Internet.

The agreed upon price was $1,500 and in short time the man received a check for $4,800. The check was written on an account from a bank in Orlando, Fla., and assigned to the office of the Fulton County Commission in Atlanta.

Instructions e-mailed to the Raymond man from the alleged purchaser asked him to deposit the check, take out what he had coming for the sales price and shipping expenses and to wire the balance to a woman in Glen Carbon, Ill.

The man did deposit the check in his account, but then became suspicious. He contacted his bank to have the deposit stopped and closed out his account. He also called the Racine County Sheriff's Department on Saturday morning to report the incident.

He never did wire any money, never lost any money through the deal and still has the ATV.

Man tries to elude deputies

Calvin Leonard Schmidt, 27, 8327 Marsh Road, Town of Waterford, was cited for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, fleeing an officer, speeding and obstruction after a short chase with sheriff's deputies just after 1 a.m. Monday that ended at a residence at 28433 East Main Drive.

According to Sheriff's Department reports, the incident began when a vehicle heading east on Main Street in the Village of Waterford was clocked on radar by an oncoming sheriff's squad as going slightly over the posted speed limit. But as the suspect vehicle passed the deputy's car, the driver accelerated.

The westbound deputy turned his car around and followed the vehicle and observed it squeal its tires away from the stop light at Highway 36.

The vehicle then turned its lights off and turned into the driveway at 28433 East Main, where Schmidt was taken into custody.
