The health departments of Racine, Caledonia/Mount Pleasant are encouraging people to test their homes for radon, a naturally occurring, odorless radioactive gas.
Breathing air with high concentrations of radon could lead to lung cancer, and the Department of Health and Family Services has estimated that between 5 and 10 percent of Wisconsin homes will have elevated levels of radon, according to a release from the Racine City Health Department.
The Racine City and Caledonia/Mount Pleasant health departments offer radon test kits for $5. These kits are also available at most hardware stores for about $20 to $30.
