RACINE - A man accused of repeatedly molesting a 9-year-old girl reportedly told police the abuse was the girl's fault.
Police found out about the alleged sexual abuse on Wednesday. A woman told police that her 9-year-old daughter reported a man the family knew had touched her inappropriately.
An investigator spoke to the girl, who described being abused by Steven L. Baker, 54, 2063 Charles St.
When speaking with a trained interviewer about the alleged abuse, the girl suffered from extreme anxiety and distress, according to the criminal complaint. The interview was stopped early because she had an anxiety attack.
When police spoke with Baker he reportedly admitted to a host of abuses against the girl, starting when she was 6 years old. The story he reportedly gave police portrayed himself as the girl's victim, and he said she asked him to touch her. The complaint also states that Baker told police he knew his actions were wrong, but could not stop, and that he should have known better.
Baker was charged Friday with repeated sexual assault of a child. If convicted, he will face at least 60 years in the prison system, with a minimum of 25 years in prison. He is being held in the Racine County Jail on $50,000 cash bail.
