UGHS TO PRESENT 'THE BOYS NEXT DOOR'

UNION GROVE - The Union Grove High School drama department will present Tom Griffin's "The Boys Next Door" at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday in the performance center at the school, 3433 S. Colony Ave.

"The Boys Next Door" is a most unusual and rewarding play that takes place in a New England communal residence, where four mentally disabled men live under the supervision of a young, gentle and understanding social worker, Jack (played by Eric Welch).

Included in "The Boys Next Door" cast are a delightful collection of characters with unique, fun-to-watch personalities and peculiarities. Norman (Mark Osmundsen) works in a doughnut shop, loves to eat doughnuts and is proud of his abundant collection of keys. Lucien P. Smith (Connor Benson) is a man with the mind of a 5-year-old who can't read but who drags his prized books around in his little red wagon.

The "leader" in the group home is Arnold (Kyle "Carlos" Lopez), a hyperactive, compulsive chatterbox. Barry Klemper (Jarret Ayres) is a smart schizophrenic who fantasizes that he is a golf pro. Unfortunately, Barry is devastated by rejection from his brutal, cruel father, Mr. Klemper (Sloane Hagen).

Adding delight to the show are many other characters including Sen. Clarke (Lauren DeVries), "girlfriend" Sheila (Katrina Dodge), Clara (Gina Geliche), Mr. Corbin (Brian Jacobs), Mrs. Warren (Lauren Londre), Mrs. Fremus (Ashley Overson), and Mr. Hedges (Brad Pitekowski).

There's also a fun-loving group of party-goers including many girls. Party-goers include Steffan Hagan, Ariel Hartung, Erin Hartung, Brian Jacobs, Becca Johnson, Amanda Kristopeit, Max Melendrez and Kara Maurice.

In addition to the cast, many Union Grove Union High School students are working as stage crew members: Katie Stege, Trevor Wolff, Steven Peterson, Nate Hermann, Kali Kasprowicz, Lynsie Michel, Sarah Ostrander, Cody Thur, Aimee Villwock, Brandon Hedrington and Ryan Cornog. The director is Michael Snider.

We learn that although "the boys" are mentally handicapped, they are much like us in their desire to enjoy love and laughter and to find meaning and purpose in their lives.

Tickets available at the door are $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and students.
