SC Johnson Fund awards scholarships to Young Leaders

RACINE - The SC Johnson Fund program was established to assist high school seniors in the Racine Unified School District attendance area who plan to continue their education in college or vocational school programs. The scholarship program is administered by Scholarship America.

Applicants must demonstrate economic need, have a minimum cumulative grade point average, plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited college, university or vocational-technical school. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, gender or disability.

The SC Johnson Fund established the program in 2002 and has assisted 128 students with $1,640,880 in scholarships paid since the program's inception. The SC Johnson Fund will provide $280,000 in scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year assisting 15 new recipients and 44 renewed scholarships.

These are this year's new SC Johnson Fund Young Leaders recipients, each of whom received a $5,000 scholarship with the ability to renew it for an additional three years:

• Elkid Alvarez graduated from Racine Lutheran High School to attend Universidad Adventista de las Antillas in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, majoring in middle school education.

• Mikaela Benner graduated from Park High School to attend St. Norbert College in De Pere majoring in art, education and Spanish.

• Brita Bolter graduated from Horlick High School to attend Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn., majoring in pre-occupational therapy.

• Kosheda Butler graduated from The REAL School to attend Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, Ala., majoring in elementary education.

• Samuel Carbajal graduated from The REAL School to attend Ripon College with an undecided major.

• Alan Cruz graduated from Horlick High School to attend Carthage College majoring in information systems.

• Amy Faulk graduated from Horlick High School to attend Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz., majoring in business.

• Andrew Fix graduated from Park High School to attend Carroll University in Waukesha majoring in physical therapy.

• Sriramya Gainedi graduated from the Prairie School to attend Occidental College in Los Angeles.

• Julie Hantschel graduated from St. Catherine's High School to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring as a nurse practitioner.

• Olivia Jimenez graduated from The REAL School to attend Carthage College.

• Ian Morey graduated from Case High School to attend University of Chicago majoring in public policy.

• Danaee Perez graduated from St. Catherine's High School to attend the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in Minneapolis-St. Paul majoring in computer science.

• Jessica Phan graduated from Case High School to attend UW-Madison majoring in journalism.

• Bradley Price graduated from Case High School to attend Carthage College majoring in accounting.
