RACINE - There are plenty of professional songwriters who get a chance to hear their work on the radio. Not all of them can brag about a No. 1 hit.
But 14-year-old Shane Morey can.
Shane, a freshman at Horlick High School, co-wrote a song for an alternative metal band when he was in middle school. That song, "Paralyzer," has topped U.S. and Canadian song charts.
The lyrics for the song include:
"Well I'm not paralyzed
But, I seem to be struck by you
I want to make you move
Because you're standing still
If your body matches
What your eyes can do
You'll probably move right through
Me on my way to you."
Shane said he wrote the song with friends when he was in seventh grade at Jerstad-Agerholm Middle School. They wrote the song during their lunch hour after a school dance.
"We were at a dance and my friend was nervous to go up and talk to somebody," Shane said. "That's where the 'I'm not paralyzed,' came in."
After Shane wrote the song, he gave it to the members of a Canadian alternative metal band called Finger Eleven, who were visiting Racine. One of Shane's friends has a brother in the group, which is how he met them.
The band liked the lyrics, and in March of 2007, Finger Eleven released the song as part of their most recent album "Them vs. You vs. Me." The song became their most successful single to date.
"Paralyzer" reached no. 1 in Canada and both U.S. rock charts. It also hit no. 6 in the U.S. Hot 100 in November of 2007.
The band has performed the song on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" twice in March of 2007 and again in January. Finger Eleven also played the song at the 2007 National Hockey League awards show in June of 2007, and the Miss USA 2008 pageant in Las Vegas in April of 2008.
In March of 2008, "Them vs. You vs. Me," was certified a U.S. Gold Album.
Shane said the song's success still seems a little strange to him. But music appears to be his passion.
"He just loves music," said Shane's dad, Mike Morey. "He's always writing songs."
Shane said his love for music began in his dad's car. Driving around, the radio was always tuned to rock bands from the 1970s and 1980s that his dad liked to listen to. He liked the music.
"(Those bands) kind of influenced me," Shane said.
Over the past few years he's written a lot of songs. He also plays the bass guitar. Shane's been taking bass lessons for about three years and is teaching himself to play a little on the piano.
While he isn't in a formal band, Shane said he likes to get together with his brother - who is also a musician - and friends to jam. He's even performed at a few summer festivals in Racine.
Although he loves music, and has an obvious talent, Shane doesn't plan on making it his profession. "I actually plan on going to MSOE (Milwaukee School of Engineering)," he said. "I want to be an engineer."
He does plan, however, to keep on writing songs and playing, even if it is just a hobby.
