"Ask, and ye shall receive." It's a scriptural phrase that we may often scoff at, especially during difficult times. Just don't tell that to local nonprofit agencies. They have a different story to tell.

They asked, and you responded.

For the past month, The Journal Times has been publishing a Wish List of items and volunteer opportunities from nonprofit agencies as part of our Forward Racine: Charities and Volunteering initiative. You can see the list on Page 1C of today's paper; it appears on that page weekly.

And Journal Times' readers have answered the call:

n Racine Family Literacy received a fax machine and paper shredder. And the Burlington Senior Center received two card tables. "They were both ecstatic and extremely grateful," reports Tracy Nielsen, vice president of marketing and resource development for United Way of Racine County.

n Lakeside Curative Services received a TV, DVD/VHS player, craft supplies and an outside swing/glider. "The Wish List not only helped with donations, but it brought a little publicity to our nonprofit," said Angeline Markiewicz, vocational director at Lakeside.

n The Racine Theatre Guild has received a call from someone wishing to donate a DVD player.

n The Volunteer Center of Racine County has received generous donations of needed office supplies (including from one woman who had just closed her office), a shared JT subscription and offers of help from unemployed residents who want to put their time to good use. "Many have sad stories, but are very willing to volunteer while they continue job-hunting," said Marilynn Pelky, executive director of the Volunteer Center.

n The Racine County Food Bank saw an increase in donations during the letter carriers' food drive on May 9. Executive Director Dan Taivalkoski also said he has received several calls from people interested in the Food Bank's community gardening project, which was featured in Taivalkoski's May 18 commentary on the Opinion page.

n Careers Industries received donations of underwear, an offer of a scooter and calls from people asking what they need the most.

And that's after just one month.

It's proof positive that every little bit counts - especially for agencies who "pay it forward" by helping so many in our community during these tough times.

So take a look at today's Wish List on Page 1C. Perhaps there's something there you can easily give. Or there's a volunteer need you can easily fill. After all, isn't that what community is all about?
