Go see 'Side by Side'

Southeast Wisconsin residents will be happy to know they don't have to spend lots of money going to New York or Chicago to see a high-class production of a Broadway musical.

"Side by Side by Sondheim", which will be playing one more weekend at the Racine Theatre Guild, is a treasure that should not be missed. Many people don't recognize the Sondheim name, but the music is unforgettable. The seven talented singers and two equally talented pianists provided us with an evening of incredible music that everyone should see.

Well done, Aquaducks

Wow, are we lucky to have such talented athletes so near in the Brown's Lake Aquaducks. Burlington's Fisher Park hosts their shows on Thursday night and they are free.

This past weekend they competed near Wisconsin Rapids and the water ski team won the Division 2 State Championship. The members also took first place in 10 out of 12 individuals categories.

The Ballet Line - 16 girls pulled by one boat - looked like the Rockettes on water and have consistently won state and national competitions for the past several years. What a wonderful opportunity for a family event. Go see the smiles, sparkling costumes, daredevil tricks, and entertaining show.

Congratulations, Aquaducks! Racine is proud of you.

USMC says thanks

Once again the Racine community showed it's generosity when our Marine Corps League Detachment, the home of the Iwo Jima Float, conducted it's annual Marine Rose Fund Drive on July 11th and 12th for veterans' rehab services and community outreach programs.

Even in this economy you spoke volumes with your contributions. We of the Marine Corps League feel honored for your support. We also appreciate the assistance of the managers of the Pick & Save on N. Green Bay Rd., Wal-Mart and the Piggly Wiggly on N. Erie St. for recognizing the need for funds to assist the many veterans' service groups.

Semper Fidelis and thank you again.

Read between the lines

Thank you to The Journal Times for a great series on the state of the Racine Public Library.

Your articles showed in sharp contrast where our library stands among other communities in the state. Despite the valiant efforts of Library Director Jessica MacPhail and her staff and the Racine Library Foundation, our library just doesn't measure up to state minimum standards and to the challenges facing our community. We need for the city, the county, and the community to come up with creative funding sources to make this important institution the best it can be.

Given the gang and unemployment challenges we face, why not create an outstanding library in Racine that is a beacon for all those young people who are there to read and learn and bring the joys of storytelling and reading to their young children?

More than most communities, we desperately need to put our money and our community pride in our public library. When the public library becomes a state-of-the-art, vibrant center of a community where families gather and community groups meet, we make a strong statement that books and learning are more powerful than guns and gangs and drugs.
