While the Hot Rod Power Tour may be the ultimate classic car experience, there are also a range of smaller car shows scheduled throughout the summer in and around Racine County where enthusiasts can get their fill of a variety of vehicles.
One will take place in Yorkville on Sunday, June 7, the same day that the Hot Rod Power Tour comes through town. The Union Grove Chicken Barbecue & Car, Van and Motorcycle Show will be held at the Racine County Fairgrounds, 19805 Durand Ave., from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. (barbecue runs from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) Sunday. The fee to show a vehicle is $10, spectators are admitted free.
Here are some other options:
June 5: Vintage Motorcycle Show, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Racine Heritage Museum, 701 Main St.Vintage motorcycles will be featured in the parking lot north of the museum. Inside the museum will be a small exhibit about motorcycles in Racine.
Learn about the "Motor Bicycle" made by the Mitchell Motor Co. The exhibit also includes a 1923 photo of Racine Police aboard a fleet of motorcycles, and a fun story about a 1902 motorcycle race involving a Mitchell Motor bike and a very young Harley-Davidson.
June 13 and 14: Classic Car Show, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the RASA soccer complex, 9509 Dunkelow Road, Franksville. This show, which runs in conjunction with the Copa Alianza/Verizon Wireless Soccer Tournament, whill feature low riders, as well as classic cars. No entry fee. June 28: Fourth Annual Classic Car, Antique and Custom Motorcycle Show, from 1 to 6 p.m., between George's Tavern and the Racine Eagles Club Aerie 281 at North Main and Hamilton streets in Racine's Rivernorth neighborhood. Proceeds from the event support the Lew Reed Spinal Cord Injury Fund, an Eagles Club charity. Vehicle entry is $8, admission is free.
July 12 (rain date July 19): Rods for a Reason, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Petrifying Springs Park, Area #4, Somers. All fees from this car and motorcycle show, which is organized by veteran show organizer Steve Jordan, go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Wisconsin. Music, kids activities, food, awards and prizes. One door prize is a $500 paint job from Maaco Auto Body, donated as a thank you to MAW for help the owner's family received from the foundation. Vehicle entry is $10, admission is free. July 19: 11th Annual Classy Cruiser Car Club Show, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pritchard Park, corner of Durand Avenue and Ohio Street. Call Gregg St. Martin at (262) 639-9827 (eves) or (262) 989-0427 (days). Entry is $8 in advance and $10 day of event. Admission is free.
Aug. 23: 14th Annual Classic Car and Bike Show, at Racine Zoo, corner of Main and Goold streets, 350 cars and bikes of all makes, models and years; live entertainment; food and prizes. Call (262) 636-9189 for info.
Aug 30: Planes, Trains & Automobiles Fly-In at the Burlington Airport, one mile northwest of Burlington, off of Highway 11. Antique and new planes, vehicles and tractors. Breakfast and lunch, 7 a.m. to noon. Call (262) 514-4359.
Every Thursday now through Sept. 26: Car Show, starting at 5 p.m. at McDonald's, 6630 Washington Ave., Mount Pleasant. All vehicles welcome, entertainment provided. Go to:
