LOCAL COLLEGES: Parkside's Hansen off to hot start at regional

Junior Andy Hansen shot a 2-over-par 73 Monday to lead UW-Parkside in the first round of the NCAA Division II Men's Midwest/South Regional at Allendale, Mich.

Parkside was in 19th place with a 308 after the first round. Wayne State leads with a 278.

"One of the holes got a number of our guys," Parkside coach Mark Olsen said. "In some instances, we didn't play well at all."

Hansen is six shots behind leader Steve Cuzzort of Wayne State.

Sophomore Andrew Troyanek and junior Bob Tierney both shot 7-over 78s. Freshman Keith Buntrock shot an 8-over 79 and Mike Keller shot a 10-over 81.

CARTHAGE: The Red Men did not receive an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship when the 36-team field was announced Monday. However, Carthage's Tyler Wollberg, who has a team-leading 73.1 season average, was among the five individuals who were selected to participate. Wollberg played in last year's championship, also as an individual, and tied for 15th with a four-round total of 300.

This year's championship will be played May 13-16 at the PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Baseball

CARTHAGE: The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament will be held at Carthage Thursday through Saturday.

Second-seeded Illinois Wesleyan plays third-seeded Wheaton at noon Thursday. Top-seeded Carthage, which won the CCIW regular-season title, plays fourth-seeded Augustana at 3 p.m.

The tournament continues with three games Friday. The two losing teams play at 10 a.m., followed by the two winners at 1 p.m. The semifinal will be at 4 p.m.

The championship round starts at noon Saturday. The winner of the tournament receives the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Championship.

Softball

CARTHAGE: Five Carthage softball players have been named to the All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin team.

Earning first-team honors were pitcher Kelsey Epping (14-6, 0.83 ERA), shortstop Kari Peterson (.364, 7 home runs, 24 RBIs) and designated hitter Alyssa Schrader. (.273, 5 home runs, 19 RBIs) First baseman Jacquelyn Tassone (.275, eight doubles, 12 RBIs) and outfielder Stephanie Noel (.333, eight doubles, four home runs, 23 RBIs), were second team.

Epping, Peterson and Noel were second team All-CCIW in 2008 and Tassone was a first-team pick.
