The Carthage College baseball team suffered its first loss of the season Monday, losing 9-5 to Wooster in 11 innings at North Port, Fla.
Carthage (3-1), ranked 28th in the D3baseball.com poll, led 5-4 after a four-run fifth inning, but Wooster scored the tying run in the top of the ninth when Shoreland Lutheran High School graduate Tyler Eickmeyer made an errant throw on what would have been a game-ending double play.
Wooster (10-2, ranked 14th in the poll) scored four runs off Carthage reliever Bryan Kieffer in the top of the 11th inning to get the victory. Mike Hughes went 2-for-5 with an RBI and is hitting 10-for-17 (.588) this spring with 11 RBIs.
* Sunday, junior pitcher Scott Danly, coming off a two-year absence because of Tommy John surgery, pitched a complete-game six-hitter for the Red Men in their
13-2, seven-inning victory at North Port.
Danly also struck out five and walked two. Park graduate John Lequia went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Carthage and Tim Hansen went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Women's tennis
CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds won their first meet of its spring trip to Florida, beating Ramapo 8-1 Monday at Orlando. Carthage swept doubles, losing just two games in three matches, and won five of the six singles matches.
Taylor Gustavson and Hollis McPeek won 8-0 at No. 1 doubles and won their No. 2 and 3 singles matches, respectively, in straight sets.
* Sunday, the Lady Reds opened their Florida trip with a 5-4 loss to UW-Eau Claire.
Men's tennis
CARTHAGE: The Red Men lost to Le Tourneau 7-2 Monday at Orlando, Fla.
Sammy Ramoni won in three sets at No. 2 singles for Carthage and Jack Schiro and Andy Schwenke won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.
* Sunday, Carthage beat Adelphi 5-4.
