LOCAL COLLEGES: Carthage goes deep in victory over Rockford

Offense was in ample supply Tuesday for the Carthage College baseball team.

The Red Men, ranked 33rd in the D3baseball.com poll, pounded out 14 hits, including two home runs, in a 10-5 nonconference victory over Rockford College at Road Ranger Stadium in Loves Park, Ill.

Carthage (13-4) wasted no time taking control, scoring five runs in the first three innings, highlighted by Mike Hughes' two-run first-inning home run and Mike McGuire's RBI double in the third.

Drew Roberts, who went 3-for-4, hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to put Carthage ahead 6-2.

Hughes, who went 2-for-4, added an RBI double in the Red Men's four-run seventh.

Joe Ferro went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Chris Shannon went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Former Park High School standout John Lequia went 1-for-4.

Starting pitcher Chadd Ori allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks in six innings and struck out six. Bryan Kieffer was reached for three runs on four hits in three innings in relief.

Softball

CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds split a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader with North Park at the Carthage Softball Field in Kenosha, winning the first game 3-0, but losing the second game 3-2.

In the opener, Carthage (14-6, 3-3 CCIW) broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by Stephanie Noel's two-run single. Stephanie Hueramo led off the inning with a triple. Winning pitcher Kelsey Epping struck out 13 and shut out the Vikings on one hit and three walks in seven innings. Noel went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

In the second game, North Park (9-9, 1-1 CCIW) scored three runs in the third with the help of two errors and a passed ball on a third strike. Carthage scored single runs in the fourth and seventh innings. The Lady Reds had the potential tying run at second in the seventh, but Hueramo popped up to end the game. Vikings pitcher Kate Seebacher limited the Lady Reds to two runs (one earned) and six hits.

HonorsPARKSIDE: Freshman Jadee Rooney, a starting guard for the UW-Parkside women's basketball team, was named to the all-freshman team by the Division II Bulletin. Rooney is the only player from the Great Lakes Valley Conference on the elite list. Rooney averaged 12.3 points per game and was honored as the GLVC Freshman of the Year. She also earned GLVC Player of the Week honors once during the season and was named to the All-GLVC third team.

CARTHAGE: Senior catcher Mike Hughes of Carthage went 7-for-13 (.538) and shared College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Players of the Week honors with Wheaton pitcher Steve Dennison. Hughes scored five runs, hit three home runs, drove in 13 runs and had a 1.308 slugging percentage. Carthage beat North Park 13-8 and swept a doubleheader from Millikin 4-3 and 16-6.

* Junior Sammy Ramoni of Carthage was one of three student-athletes who shared CCIW Co-Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors for last week. Ramoni won his No. 2 singles match against Troy Brinker 4-6, 6-1 (10-3) of the University of Chicago.
