Sophomore Whitney Olson led the way for the UW-Parkside women's track and field team at the Bucknell University Bison Classic last weekend at Lewisburg, Pa., winning the first section of nine total sections in the 800-meter run. Olson's time of 2:20.44 was an improvement by more than seven seconds on her previous best time. Overall in the meet, she placed 26th of 79 entrants. Freshman teammate Brittany Glassburn finished 48th overall in 2:22.92.
Also for Parkside, sophomore Angie Adams was third in the first of three unseeded sections in the 1,500 run with a career-best time of 5:02.27 and sophomore teammate Jennie Kindt was 35th overall in the event.
Freshman Alex Mena led the Parkside men, winning the first of four sections in the unseeded 1,500 run in 4:05.72, a three-second improvement on his career best. Mena was 27th of 55 runners in the event. Teammate Dustin Baldwin, a sophomore, was 35th overall in 4:08.07.
Former St. Catherine's High School standout LaQuan Fenderson, a sophomore, and former Horlick standout Rob Hansen, a senior, were third in their sections in the 800 run. Fenderson ran a career-best 1:58.74 to place 47th overall and Hansen ran a 1:59.55 to place 54th overall.
Parkside coach Mike De Witt said the Bison Classic is considered a tuneup for the Penn Relays and features more than 1,500 athletes from NCAA Division I, II and III schools.
n Four Rangers have been accepted to compete in the Mt. SAC (San Antonio College) Relays Thursday and Friday in Walnut, Calif. Ben Orvold and Heidi Ertl will compete in the collegiate section of the 10,000 run Thursday evening and Jessica Monson and Hope Christie will compete in the collegiate 1,500 run Friday.
The four athletes are also entered to compete Saturday in the Cal State Long Beach "Beach Invitational."
Selected athletes must meet minimum standards.
CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds were fourth of 21 teams at the Chicagoland Outdoor Track & Field Championships April 10-11 at the University of Chicago's Amos Alonzo Stagg Field. The Host Maroons won the team championship with 150 points. Carthage scored 85 points.
Ashley Johnson, Shacuana Gaines and Katie Gordon led the Lady Reds with second-place finishes. Johnson was second in the 800 run (2:23.76), Gaines was second in the triple jump (35-6) and Gordon was second in the discus (129-11).
Heather Gilmore was third in the 100 high hurdles (15.22) and Julie Rendino was third in the javelin (110-5¼).
On the men's side, the Red Men tied for eighth. North Central College won the 20-team event with 175.5 points. Carthage and Loyola University (Ill.) scored 40 points each.
Buzzy Brown and Jon Kochmit led Carthage with second-place finishes in the long jump (22-5) and hammer throw (177-2¼) respectively. Joel Brunner was fourth in the 800 run (1:57.77) and Case graduate Prentis Wilbourn was fourth in the long jump (21-10¼).
