LOCAL COLLEGES: Red Men double their pleasure

The Carthage College baseball team followed a tight game with a laugher Saturday as it swept a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader against Millikin at Kenosha. The Red Men won by scores of 4-3 and 16-6.

In the first game, Carthage (11-4, 5-0 CCIW) took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on Mike Hughes' two-run double and led 4-1 after eight innings. The Big Blue (8-9, 2-3) scored twice in the top of the ninth before Trace Ruffie (2-1), who went the distance and struck out 10, got out of the inning.

In the second game, the Red Men scored in each of the first six innings, including four in the first and sixth innings. Park High School graduate John Lequia didn't have a hit, but scored three runs, including a steal of home on the front end of a double steal in the first. Hughes hit a two-run home run in the second and Josh Albers hit a three-run homer in the sixth. Hughes went 3-for-4 with five RBIs and Lequia had two stolen bases.

UW-PARKSIDE: The Rangers struggled at the plate and on the mound and were swept by Saint Joseph's 6-0 and 13-1 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Rensselaer, Ind.

In the first game, Parkside had just two hits off Pumas starter Shane Zegarac (3-2). Saint Joseph's scored three runs in the first inning and two in the second off Rangers starter John Olson (0-7), who struck out five and walked one.

In the second game, the Pumas (21-11, 6-5) scored nine runs in the bottom of the third to put the game away. Parkside (3-28, 3-9 GLVC) had just five hits and scored its run in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Josh Fick.

Softball

CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds swept Elmhurst 1-0 and 11-8 in eight innings in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader at Elmhurst, Ill.

In the first game, Kelsey Epping pitched a four-hitter, walking four and striking out six. Carthage scored the only run of the game in the second inning on an sacrifice fly by Nikki Soreng.

In the second game, Carthage (13-5, 2-2 CCIW) led 8-7 after six innings, but Millikin (11-5, 0-2) tied it in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the eighth, Kari Peterson hit a game-winning three-run home run. Alyssa Schrader hit a grand slam in the fifth inning for the Lady Reds.

UW-PARKSIDE: The Rangers split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader against Missouri S&T, winning the first game 7-3 and losing the second 3-2 at Romeoville, Ill.

In the first game, Parkside, the home team in the doubleheader, scored five runs in the third inning, three on a home run by Alea McNellis. Kallie Walczak (6-6) struck out five in the complete-game victory.

In the second game, the Rangers scored twice in the fifth in RBI singles by Alyssa Wilson and Amanda Miller to get within 3-2. Jessica Bryant (4-4) allowed just one hit over the first three innings.

Men's volleyball

CARTHAGE: Randy Hansen had 13 kills and Eric Ball had 10 to lead the Red Men to Midwest-III Conference Tournament title at Kenosha. Carthage (8-25), which got 18 digs from Tyler Berry, beat Milwaukee School of Engineering (10-19) 30-18, 30-25, 30-26 in the championship match.

Men's golf

CARTHAGE: The Red Men totaled 605 and finished second in the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational at Normal, Ill. The host team won at 584.

Carthage's Tim Gannon tied for sixth place at 75-72-147 and teammate Tyler Wollberg tied for 11th at 73-77-150. Scott Belcher of Illinois-Springfield earned medalist honors with a 142.

UW-PARKSIDE: The Rangers totaled 292 and are in sixth place after the first round in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region tournament at Georgetown, Ky.

Indianapolis leads the tournament at 283, one stroke ahead of Findlay-Grand Valley.

Junior Bob Tierney had the Rangers' best round, a 70, and sophomore Andrew Troyanek shot 73.
