LOCAL COLLEGES: Monson in prime form for UW-Parkside women's track team

Senior Jessica Monson placed second in the 1,500-meter run Friday in the College/Open Division Section at the Mt SAC (San Antonio College) Relays. Monson ran a career-best time of 4:24.25 to finish just off the pace of champion Asia Diaz of Texas Tech (4:23.88).

Monson trailed the tightly-packed field of 15 runners through 800 meters and worked her way near the leaders over the next 600 meters, running her third 400 meters in 70.2 seconds and her final 300 meters in 48.8.

Her previous-best time in the event was 4:27.21, which was accomplished on the same track last year at the NCAA Division II National Meet. Monson's time is the second-fastest in the history of Parkside's program (Michelle Marter-Rohl was a 4:21.09 in 1988) and is an automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA Division II national meet.

Parkside's Hope Christie finished seventh in the third section of the same event with a time of 4:39.80. She finished 48th among the field of 60.

In Thursday evening's Mt SAC Relays Distance Carnival, Parkside's Heidi Ertl placed 21st out of 28 runners in the Collegiate/Open Division 10,000 run. Her time of 37:38.35 places her 10th on the all-time Parkside list in the event

Sarah Porter of Western Washington won the event in 34:58.97.

Parkside's other entrant, Ben Orvold, also ran a career-best mark when he placed 43rd out of 55 runners in the Men's Collegiate/Open Division 10,000. His time was 31:21.08.

Christie and Orvold went on to compete in Long Beach State's "Beach Invitational" Saturday at Cerritos College in Norwalk, Calf. Christie placed 41st of out 80 athletes in the open 800 (2:18.45) and Orvold placed seventh out of 19 entrants in the 5,000 (15:51.58).

Men's golf

UW-PARKSIDE: The Rangers were tied for 12th after the first round of the Great Lakes Regional Sunday at Noblesville, Ind. With a team score of 307, Parkside was 21 strokes off the pace of leader Ferris State (286).

Keith Buntrock had rounds of 38 and 36 for a 2-over-par 74. Also leading Parkside were Andrew Troyanek (40-37-77), Andy Hansen (40-38-78) and Mike Keller (40-38-78).

CARTHAGE: The Carthage men placed sixth in Augustana's "Meet of Champions" Saturday at Rock Island, Ill., with 63 points. The Red Men's Nate Hughes won the javelin (194-3) and Buzzy Brown was first in the long jump (22-3 ¾). Placing third were Case High School graduate Prentis Wilbourn in the triple jump (346-3 ½) and Josh Brennan in the hammer throw (170-2).

The Carthage women, finished seventh in Wheaton's "Twilight Invitational" at Wheaton, Ill., with 59 points. Three Carthage athletes placed third - Ashley Johnson in the 800 (2:17.67), Stephanie Moy in the high jump (5-1) and Shacuana Gaines in the triple jump (37-1).

Men's lacrosse

CARTHAGE: The Red Men lost to Adrian 22-6 Sunday at Adrian, Mich. Aaron Messmer scored two goals for the Red Men (2-7) and Spencer Curley had 21 saves.
