RACINE - Jason Caspers' 42-year-old body is exhibiting some wear and tear these days.
He is dealing with a chronic lower back problem and tendonitis in his right knee.
Fortunately for Caspers, his right arm is as robust as ever.
The right-handed Caspers relied on a powerful and accurate serve Sunday to win another Racine on the Lake Tennis Classic championship at Lockwood Park. Caspers beat Mike Johnson, his junior by five years, 6-2, 6-0 for the men's open singles title.
It was an unprecedented 14th singles championship for Caspers - his first coming in 1988 at the tender age of 21.
"My game today isn't on the par as it was years ago,'' Caspers said. "I used to be an absolute speed demon on the court. Now I'm slow.
"But I'm definitely smarter and I hit the ball as well as I ever did.''
That was clear right from the outset of this match, which was played under sunny skies with a light breeze.
Using a variety of crisp forehands, backhands and serves, Caspers won the first two games with relative ease.
Johnson, who was making his first Racine on the Lake Finals appearance, showed his resolve by winning the next game with some precise shots.
But Caspers put on a serving clinic in the fourth game, delivering three consecutive aces to regain control of the set.
Caspers, who considered not playing in this year's tournament because of his physical ailments, acknowledged his effective serve was the major difference in the match.
"I served well,'' Caspers said. "On these hard courts, my top spin really jumped up and Mike couldn't get on top of it. I held serve every time and that was important.''
Johnson, a former tennis coach at Horlick High School who is a biology teacher at Case High School, didn't help his cause. In the fifth game, he committed back-to-back double faults before hitting a return long.
Trailing 1-0 in the second set, Johnson had a couple of miscues - first hitting a return long and then hitting a return wide - before Caspers hit two straight booming serves to win the game.
"Jason was more consistent than I was, that's for sure,'' Johnson said. "And I wasn't serving too hot and he took advantage of my second serves.''
Caspers closed out the match by winning the remaining four games.
"I felt really good out there today,'' Caspers said. "It's definitely a good feeling to win this again. I possibly couldn't be happier to play at this level at this stage in my life.''
Caspers teamed with Kevin Lock to beat Johnson and Nader Khreish
6-0, 7-5 for men's doubles championship.
