Public hearing on VHS rule
The Department of Natural Resources is holding several public hearings on the proposal to enact permanent regulations to slow or stop the spread of viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS), a deadly fish virus. The DNR adopted temporary emergency measures recently, but wants to make permanent the rules to limit the movement of fish and water from possible infected waters to stop the spread of the disease, which already has caused large fish kills in Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair and the St. Lawrence River and has been found in Lake Michigan and Lake Winnebago.
The southeastern Wisconsin public hearing will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16 at the DNR Southeast Region Headquarters, 2300 North Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
