GOLF: Woltman leads U.S. Amateur qualifiers

Dan Woltman of University Ridge Golf Course shot a 4-under-par 136 for 36 holes Monday at the Kenosha Country Club to lead the qualifying for the 2009 U.S. Amateur Championship Aug. 24-30 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

Woltman was the medalist and one of three qualifiers to advance from the Kenosha Country Club qualifier.

Mike Sorenson of the Wisconsin PGA Junior Tour was second at even-par 140 and qualified as did Danny Zimmerman of Hawks Landing Golf Club, who shot 2-over 142.

WPGA SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP: Doug Shelton, a PGA Life Member, shot even-par 72 Monday at Northwood Golf Course in Rhinelander to take a two-shot lead after the first round of the WPGA Senior Championship.

Rich Tock of Ozaukee Country Club was second at 2-over 74 and Larry Tiziani of Cherokee was another shot back at 75.

The second and final round of the tournament will be played today.

WAGPA CHAMPIONSHIP: Mike Johnston of Green Fields, former St. Catherine’s High School standout Andrew Podolak of Fire Ridge and Kurt Mantyla of The Legend at Brandybrook have qualified for the PGA Assistant Golf Pros national championship.

Johnston won the 36-hole stroke play Callaway Golf WAGPA Championship at Fire Ridge Golf Club in Grafton Monday, shooting a 7-under 137 total. Podolak was second at even-par 144 and and Mantyla tied for third at 1-over 145.

The three qualified for the national tournament.

Adam Steinhofer of Monona Grove tied Mantyla at 145. Ryan Helminen of SentryWorld and Joe DeRosa of La Crosse Country Club tied for fifth at 146 and are the alternates for the national tournament.

Racine native Jason Samuelian of Tuckaway Country Club shot 5-over 149 and tied for 11th.
