A 3-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against Elmhurst wrapped up the outright College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship for the Carthage College baseball team Saturday. And just for good measure, the Red Men, ranked 13th in the "D3baseball.com" poll, completed the sweep with a 17-3 victory in the second game at the Carthage Baseball Field in Kenosha.
In the opener, Carthage (28-5, 17-1 CCIW) tied the game in the fourth on an opposite-field home run by Tyler Eickmeyer, the former Shoreland Lutheran High School standout. A solo home run by Mark Sobol in the fifth put Carthage up 2-1 and the Red Men took a 3-1 lead in the sixth on former Park High School standout John Lequia's leadoff single and Sobol's RBI single. Winning pitcher Mario Perez (5-0) allowed one run on four hits and three walks in seven innings and struck out seven.
Sobol went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Eickmeyer went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
In the second game, Sobol hit two home runs - a three-run shot in the second and a two-run shot in the fourth - and Mike Hughes hit a grand slam in the sixth to lead Carthage. Sobol went 3-for-5 with six RBIs and Hughes was 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Starting pitcher Eric Rohe (4-0) went the distance, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk. He struck out seven.
PARKSIDE: The Rangers snapped a 13-game losing streak, beating Lewis University 8-4 in the second game of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Romeoville, Ill. The Flyers won the opener 9-5.
The weekend four-game series originally was scheduled to be played at Parkside, but was moved to Lewis because of wet grounds on the Parkside campus in Somers.
Alex Dawson led the Rangers (5-42) in the first game, hitting a two-run home run in the fifth inning and going 3-for-4 at the plate.
In the second game, Parkside rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 4-4 tie. The Rangers took the lead on an unearned run and an RBI double by Robert Bellish and two-run single by Nick Cozzi capped the scoring.
Closer Nic Larson earned his fourth save of the season, shutting Lewis down in the top of the seventh.
Andy Heller, Bellish and Kurt Weigartz each went 2-for-4 and had RBI doubles in the game.
Softball
CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds were eliminated in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament at Bloomington, Ill., losing 7-0 Saturday to top-seeded and 12th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan.
Carthage opened play in the tournament Friday with a 1-0 loss to Wesleyan, but bounced back with a 2-0 victory over third-seeded Augustana in the double-elimination tournament.
Against Wesleyan Saturday, Christy Engel and Lauren James combined on a one-hit shutout. Engel allowed one hit, didn't walk a batter and struck out eight in five innings and James finished with two hitless innings of relief and struck out four. Catcher Jess Fijolek had Carthage's only hit of the game, a double in the third.
Kris Lee hit a two-run home run in the third and Monica Urban tripled in a run in the fourth to lead Wesleyan.
Wesleyan won the CCIW Tournament by beating North Central twice Saturday, winning 1-0 in 10 innings and 5-3.
Men's tennis
CARTHAGE: The top-seeded Red men won the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament with a 6-3 victory over Wheaton College Saturday on the final day of the two-day tournament at the Smeds Tennis Center in Kenosha.
The CCIW title is the seventh overall and sixth in a row for the Carthage men.
Junior Jack Schiro beat Davis Moore 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles for the Red Men.
Carthage won at Nos. 1-4 singles and at Nos. 1-2 doubles.
Women's tennis
CARTHAGE: Top-seeded Wheaton won the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Women's Tennis Automatic Qualifying Tournament and the league's automatic qualifier with a 9-0 victory over second-seeded Carthage at the Smeds Tennis Center on the Carthage campus in Kenosha.
Men's golf
CARTHAGE: Led by Matt Carr, the Carthage men's golf team finished second in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Men's Golf Championship.
Carr finished third overall and earned All-CCIW honors with a 70-70-76-76-292 at the Whisper Creek Golf Club in Huntley, Ill.
Carthage finished with a 1,188 total, 23 strokes behind winner Illinois Wesleyan, which earned the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships.
Tim Gannon and Tyler Wollberg tied for sixth and earned All-CCIW honors. Gannon at 72-69-76-78-295 and Wollberg at 71-73-75-76-295.
Track & field
CARTHAGE: The Red Men finished third and the Lady Reds fifth in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin outdoor championships held at Art Keller Field on the Carthage campus in Kenosha.
In the men's meet, Carthage had four event winners: Junior Buzzy Brown won the long jump (23-1¼), sophomore Prentis Wilourn, a former Case High School standout, won the triple jump
(46-0), senior Kenton Rauwerdink won the decathlon (6,269 points) and senior Spencer Williams won the shot put (50-8¼).
Wilbourn also was third in the long jump (21-11½).
The Carthage men scored 140.5 points to finish behind North Central (278.5) and Augustana (246).
On the women's side, Carthage scored 117 points and had two champions. Illinois Wesleyan won the women's team title with 227 points.
Freshman Christine Nelson won the heptathlon (3,958 points) and sophomore Heather Gilmore won the 100-meter high hurdles (14.45).
