The Carthage College women's soccer team remained on a serious roll Tuesday.
The Lady Reds won their fifth straight match, all by shutout, with a 1-0 victory over Elmhurst at Kenosha.
Jackie Peterson scored the only goal of the match at 38:05 of the first half, a header off a corner kick sent in by Ashleigh Johnson.
Carthage (13-2, 4-0 CCIW), ranked fifth in the Central Region in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas poll, played stifling defense, holding the Bluejays (4-10-1, 2-4) to just one shot. Lady Reds goalkeeper Lindsey Bollman didn't have to make a save.
Men's soccer
CARTHAGE: Elmhurst extended its winning streak to 10 matches by taking a 2-0 lead at the half and beating the Red Men 3-1 in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin match at Kenosha.
Kevin Davey and Lukasz Masolak scored in the first half for the Bluejays (13-1-1, 5-0 CCIW), tied for seventh in the Oct. 16 National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Central Region poll.
Joey Monegato scored at 86:47 of the match to cut the deficit to 2-1 for Carthage (9-5-2, 3-1), but Jon Brehm scored an insurance goal for Elmhurst less than a minute later.
Women's volleyball
CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds, who moved up three spots to sixth in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association/CSTV Division III coaches poll, lost the first game to Elmhurst, but came back strong for a 24-30, 30-20, 30-16, 30-21 victory in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin match at Elmhurst, Ill.
- Ashley Kuehl of Carthage was named the CCIW Offensive Player of the Week for her performance at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational last weekend.
The Lady Reds finished second in the tournament and Kuehl, a senior outside hitter from McFarland, averaged 4.33 kills per game, including 21 kills in a 3-1 loss to top-ranked Juniata College in the tournament championship match Saturday.
Friday, Kuehl had 18 kills in a 3-2 victory over 19th-ranked UW-La Crosse and another 18 kills in a 3-0 victory over third-ranked UW-Whitewater.
Kuehl is fifth in the CCIW in kills per game with 3.71.
UW-PARKSIDE: Former Horlick High School standout Jennifer Johnson had a good night, but Winona State beat the Rangers 30-15, 32-30, 30-19 in a nonconference match at Winona, Minn.
Johnson had eight kills to match Kristin Schmidt for team honors and had a .294 hitting percentage, but Parkside (10-10) hit just .062 as a team. Katie Krohn had 25 assists and Jackie Nehls had 16 digs.
Women's tennis
ALL-CCIW TEAM: Carthage had two players named to the All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin first team and one named to the second team.
Beth Kaufman, the MVP of the CCIW tournament for winning at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles, and Gina Klein earned first-team honors and Taylor Gustafson was named to the second team.
Jordan Hook of Wheaton was the CCIW Player of the Year and Wheaton coach Jane Nelson was the coach of the year.
