The UW-Parkside softball team mirrored its season Sunday in its home opener, splitting a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader with Indianapolis at the Case Complex in Somers.

The Rangers (9-9, 3-3 GLVC) won the nightcap in dramatic fashion 8-7 after losing the first game 3-1.

In the second game, Lisa Casey was the hero for the Rangers, hitting a leadoff home run, her third of the day, to left center field in the bottom of the seventh.

Casey was the starting pitcher, but was pulled after giving up seven runs, all earned, in 3 2/3 innings. Mandi Andrews pitched two-hit ball the rest of the way and Casey moved to play first base.

The Greyhounds (13-11, 5-3) led 7-6 after four innings, but Parkside rallied. Pinch runner Nicki Eckstrom scored on Christine Holthus' fielder's choice to tie the game at 7-7 in the sixth, setting up Casey's game winner in the seventh.

Casey also hit a two-run home run in the second inning and another solo shot in the Rangers' three-run third inning. Amanda Miller hit a two-run home run in the third for Parkside.

In the first game, the Rangers had just five hits off Indianapolis pitcher Megan Russell, who struck out nine. The only run for Parkside came on a passed ball in the sixth inning.

Baseball

CARTHAGE: The Red Men scored in five straight innings to back the six-hit pitching of Mario Perez in their 8-6 victory over UW-Whitewater at North Port, Fla., in the final game of Carthage's spring trip.

Perez (1-0) struck out nine and didn't walk a batter. All six runs scored by the Warhawks (5-3) were unearned because Carthage (6-4) committed six errors, tying a school record for one game.

The Red Men scored all of their runs over a five-inning span, starting with two runs in the third inning. They added three runs in the fourth inning and one each in the fifth, sixth and seventh. Whitewater committed three errors and just three of Carthage's runs were earned.

Men's track and field

CARTHAGE: Spencer Williams won the shot put with a toss of 49-1¾ Saturday at the Rhodes College Open in Memphis, Tenn.

Josh Brennan and Jon Kochmit finished 3-4 in the hammer throw with throws of 161-11 and 157-3, respectively; Buzzy Brown was fourth in the long jump at 21-5¼ and Nate Hughes was fourth in the javelin (167-3). No team scores were kept.
