It was a frustrating day for seven golfers from the area Tuesday.

All of them came up short in their attempt to advance to the third round of the Wisconsin State Golf Association Match Play Championship at Arkdale.

Todd Schaap of Kenosha, who plays out of Ives Grove Golf Links, was the only one of the group to win an opening-round match. Schaap defeated Tom Halla of Pewaukee 1 up.

Schaap then lost to Ryan Grip of Wausau in the second round 3 and 2.

In other first-round matches involving golfers from the Racine area at Northern Bay Golf Resort and Marina, Andrew Troyanek of New Munster (Brighton Dale Links) lost to Michael Oellerich of Brodhead 3 and 2; Bob Tierney of Burlington (Brighton Dale Links) lost to Patrick Murphy of Middleton 1 up; Michael Masik Jr. of Racine (Meadowbrook CC) lost to Nick Weber 3 and 2; Pat Boyle of South Milwaukee (Meadowbrook) lost to Tyler Obermueller of River Falls 5 and 3; Ken Heffel of Racine (H.F. Johnson Park) lost to Austin Ehlenfeldt of Beaver Dam 1 up, and Joe O'Brien of Racine (Racine C.C.) lost to Craig Cerbins of Berlin in 20 holes.

Another golfer who had a rough day was Patrick Duffy of Appleton (Butte Des Morts), the tournament's top-seeded player.

Duffy, who shot a 6-under par in the qualifying round, lost his opening-round match to Derrick Meier of Chilton (Badger Creek) 6 and 4.

Dustin Schwab of Lodi, the tournament's defending champion, remained in the title hunt. Schwab, who plays out of Lake Wisconsin Country Club, beat Matt Behm of Janesville (Janesville Riverside) in the first round 1 up and then defeated Mike Hesselman of West Bend (West Bend CC) 1 up in the second round.

Schwab beat Bendt Bendtsen III of Racine 3-2 in last year's title match.

The 16 remaining golfers in the tournament will resume competition today.
