Racine County has not produced a winner in the Mike Bencriscutto Junior Masters State Match Play Tournament since 2001.

This year's field of 174 has the potential to produce another county player who will receive the champion's trophy and wear the green jacket.

Last year, John Gullberg of Franksville battled Sam Frank of Wales in the 16-and-under age division championship match, but lost 4 and 2. Gullberg moves up to the 18-and-under division and has to be considered one of the favorites for three reasons:

- The tournament venue, H.F. Johnson Park, is his home course;

- The experience he gained last year will help him this year;

- Gullberg is coming off his historic victory in the Racine Tri-Course Amateur Championship, becoming the first high school student to win the tournament. That should give him even more confidence.

But Gullberg, who will be a senior at Case this fall, isn't the only standout local player in the 18-and-under field that features 85 players.

Robbie Jacobsen, the All-Racine County Player of the Year this spring, has been playing well. The Horlick senior-to-be has finished in the top 10 against an international field in the last two American Junior Golf Association events in which he's played. He also tied for third in the Wisconsin PGA Junior Championship last month.

Jacobsen's teammate Adam Vanderheyden, who will be a junior at Walden III, also should be in the mix. Vanderheyden knocked Jacobsen out of match play in 16-and-under in last year's Junior Masters.

Other strong county players include Arnie Fitzwater and Jake Blatnik of Waterford and Cameron Mahnke and Zach Haman of Racine.

The top state players in the 18-and-under field include defending champion Ryan Prickette of Neenah; two-time 16-and-under winner Lee Swan of Portage; Tim McCormick of Madison, who was second in Division 1 at the WIAA State Tournament; Alex Gaugert of Lake Geneva, sixth in Division 1 at state; and Adam Schumacher, who tied Jacobsen for third at the WPGA Junior Championship.

The list of local players in the 16-and-under division, featuring 89 golfers, is also impressive.

Two players to watch are among the younger ones in the tournament. Burlington's Tony Stang and Racine's Tyler Kamakian, both 14, battled it out in the Racine County Junior Tournament before Stang prevailed for the overall title. Stang also won the 13-14 age group at the Journal Sentinel Tournament.

Other locals to watch include Franksville's Jimmy Gullberg (John's brother) and Sean Howard, Racine's Jamie Max-well and Burlington's Ryan Hilton.

State players in the mix should be Tom Boockmeier of Green Bay, who tied for fifth at the WPGA Junior, and Landon Vinger of Viola, who tied for fourth in Division 3 at the WIAA State Tournament.
