Local colleges: Carthage earns berths in Division III soccer

The Carthage College men's soccer team, which won the regular-season College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) championship, received an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.

The 57-team field for the tournament was announced Monday.

Carthage (14-5-2, 7-0 CCIW) lost out on the automatic berth in the national tournament when it lost 2-1 to Wheaton College last Wednesday in the semifinals of the CCIW Tournament.

The Red Men will be making their first national tournament appearance. They are part of the four-team first and second-round field at UW-Whitewater. Carthage opens play Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. game against No. 20 Washington University (13-4-2) of Missouri. No. 13 UW-Whitewater (15-2-2) will play No. 24 Dominican University (16-3-1) at 11 a.m. in the other first-round game.

The second-round game will be played at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11.

The Red Men, coached by Steve Domin, are led by junior Brian Santella of Wauconda, Ill., who has a team-high 24 points (10 goals, four assists) and senior Greg Goldsberry of Gurnee, Ill., who has 18 points (seven goals, four assists).

Women's soccer

CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds will be going to the national tournament after all.

Carthage lost 3-0 to Wheaton College Saturday in the final of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament, but learned Sunday night it had received an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship.

The 60-team field for the tournament was announced Sunday night.

The Lady Reds (15-4-1, 5-1-1 CCIW) will be part of the four-team regional at UW-Eau Claire. Like their male counterparts, the Lady Reds are making their first appearance in the national tournament.

Carthage will open against Concordia College (16-3-1) of Moorhead, Minn., at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. No. 15 Eau Claire (18-1-2) will play Wartburg College (16-3-1) at 11 a.m. in the other first-round game.

The second-round game will be played at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11.

Wheaton, with the CCIW's automatic qualifier to the tournament, received a first-round bye.

Women's volleyball

CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds will play host to an NCAA Division III regional championship Thursday through Saturday at the Carthage College Physical Education Center in Kenosha.

Carthage (31-4), ranked sixth in the Oct. 30 American Volleyball Coaches Association/CSTV NCAA Division III poll, plays Carroll College (20-13) at 8:30 p.m. Thursday in a quarterfinal match.

In the other quarterfinal games Thursday, No. 4 Washington University (27-5) plays Hanover College (23-10) at 1 p.m., No. 9 UW-Oshkosh (31-5) plays UW-Platteville (24-12) at 3:30 p.m. and No. 16 Calvin College (29-4) plays No. 17 UW-La Crosse (24-9) at 6 p.m.

Semifinals are at 4:30 and 7 p.m. Friday and the championship is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.

Five members of the Carthage volleyball team were named to the All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin team. Senior setter Kelly Bauer (Brookfield Central) earned first-team honors and was named CCIW Women's Volleyball Player of the Year and had a .366 attack percentage.

Joining Bauer on the first team was middle blocker Jori Simmons (Frankfort, Ill.), who had a .402 attack percentage and averaged 1.20 blocks per game. Earning second-team honors were junior outside hitter Sarah Carlino (Kildeer, Ill.) and freshman right-side player Rachel Swoboda (De Pere). Swoboda was named CCIW Newcomer of the Year. Senior outside hitter Ashley Kuehl (McFarland) earned third-team honors.

Carthage coach Leanne Ulmer was named the CCIW Women's Volleyball Coach of the Year. It is her third such honor (2002, '06, '07).

Football

CARTHAGE: Red Men quarterback Brennan O'Boyle, along with Tyler Venier and Ben Aguilar of North Central, were chosen College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Players of the Week. O'Boyle, a junior, led the Red Men to a 35-27 victory over Wheaton College. The Thunder came into the game ranked third in the D3football.com national poll. O'Boyle completed 28-of-44 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns in Carthage's victory.
