Carthage men on track for CCIW swim title

The Carthage College men's swimming team remained in first place Friday after the second day of the three-day College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Swimming Championships at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill.

The Red Men lead the championship with 674 points, 152 ahead of Wheaton with 522.

The Red Men had three wins Friday: Derek Schneider in the 400 individual medley (4:08.79), Nathan Ripley in the 200 freestyle in a school-record 1:42.32 and Stephen Schranck in the 100 breaststroke in a CCIW-record 56.61.

The Red Men also won the 200 medley relay with Chris Varner, Stephen Schranck, Doug Schranck and Andy Bax winning in a CCIW and Carthage-record 1:33.27 and the 800 relay with Doug Schranck, Isaac Rothenbaum, Adam Van Huis and Bryan Pelka winning in 7:02.51.

The Carthage women remain in second place after day two. Wheaton leads with 623 points and the Lady Reds have 580. Jensena Paul won the 100 backstroke in a CCIW and Carthage-record time of 58.32, Michelle Pelka won the 400 IM in a CCIW and Carthage-record 4:29.96 and Amanda Croix won the 200 freestyle in a CCIW and Carthage-record 1:52.78. The 200 medley relay team of Paul, Heather Croix, Pelka and Amanda Croix won in a school-record 1:46.14.

Women's tennis

CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds opened the indoor portion of their 2008-09 season with a 6-3 loss to Hope College at the DeWitt Tennis Center in Holland, Mich.

Hollis McPeek won at No. 3 singles for Carthage as did the No. 1 doubles team of McPeek and Taylor Gustafson and the No. 3 doubles team of Katie Hornick and Jennifer Immen.

Men's lacrosse

CARTHAGE: The Red Men beat the Wheaton College club team 17-6 at the Lake Barrington Field House in Lake Barrington, Ill. Spencer Curley got the win and Aaron Messmer led Carthage in ground balls with eight. Keegan Bowman had six goals and five assists for the Red Men.
