The Carthage College baseball team is in good shape heading into a key showdown.
The Red Men swept a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader Wednesday against North Park at the Carthage Baseball Field in Kenosha, winning the first game 12-1 and the second 5-2. Carthage will take records of 15-4 overall and 8-0 in the CCIW into this weekend's showdown at second place and defending CCIW champion Illinois Wesleyan.
Carthage took an 8-0 lead after three innings in the first game. Trevor Whately scored in the first inning on a throwing error by the North Park catcher.
The Red Men extended their lead to 7-0 in the second. Joe Ferro singled in the first two runs, Chris D'Angelo singled in another and Park High School graduate John Lequia walked with the bases loaded to force in another run. Mike Hughes followed with an RBI single and Josh Albers drove in the sixth run on a fielder's choice grounder.
Carthage pitcher Scott Danly's no-hit bid was broken up in the fifth inning on a solo homer by Zach Laffey.
D'Angelo went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Ferro went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Drew Roberts went 3-for-4.
In the second game, Lequia hit a bases-loaded, two-out single to give Carthage a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Lequia had three RBIs in the game.
