Bong State Recreation AreaThe Richard Bong State Recreation Area in Brighton offers the following naturalist programs. A vehicle entrance fee ($7 daily; $25 annual state residents) is required to attend all programs. Programs start promptly, so please be on time. Saturday, May 23: Introduction to the NEW WI Explorer Program, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Kids, bring an adult to participate in this fun, redesigned nature program. Learn how you can earn a colorful patch. Meet at the Amphitheater.

Saturday, May 23: Meet the Ranger, 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Learn about a park ranger's job first-hand. Discover what equipment they use and visit the squad car. Meet at the Beach Playground.

Saturday, May 23: Mammals of the Park, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Discover what makes mammals unique and which ones live in the park. We'll hike in search of mammal signs. Meet at the Visitor Center.

Sunday, May 24: Nature Printing, 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Drop in anytime from 9:30 to 10:30 and create a wearable work of art. T-shirts and other items to print will be available for a small cost. You may also bring your own T-shirt. Meet at the Visitor Center.

Sunday, May 24: Whose Ribbit is it?, 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Discover how and why frogs sing. Learn to identify frogs that live in the park, then hike in the twilight to enjoy a frog chorus. Meet at the Visitor Center.

Monday, May 25: Dragons & Damsels, 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Hike to their habitat to discover why dragonflies and damselflies are so unique and so important. Meet at the Visitor Center.

Native Plant Sale, on-going until they are gone. Buy beautiful, healthy, native plants grown in Wisconsin. Plants for sun, shade, dry and wet. Great plants for butterflies and hummingbirds. It's $3 per plant. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. At the Visitor Center.

GPS for mariners

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will conduct a four-hour "GPS for Mariners" class Saturday, May 30 at the Gander Mountain store, 6801 120th Ave., in Kenosha. The four-hour class (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) summarizes essential global positioning system concepts, explains the buttons, screens, and menus of your GPS receiver. Filled with helpful illustrations and hands-on examples, this complete and practical course and textbook show you how to be an informed GPS buyer and user, connect GPS to your computer and other navigation equipment, plan your trip and navigate with GPS using waypoints and routes, use navigation software to plan and monitor your course, utilize the many functions in your GPS to safely and enjoyably reach your destination whether under sail or power, and introduce more advanced navigation concepts. West Allis Bowmen eventsThe West Allis Bowmen Open outdoor 3D shoot is May 30-31 at the club at 11601 County Trunk G (6 Mile Road) in Franksville. Registration is from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days. n In conjunction with the Open, the club will hold an archery sporting goods swap and sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 30. Contact Debby Venne at (262) 681-2929 to reserve your space. You must provide your own table and there is no fee.

Archery league

Little John's Archers will hold a hunters league shoot. Registration will be held 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 9 and June 16 at Little John's Club House, 3617 Hwy. 31. League shooting is 10 weeks, starting June 23 and ending Aug. 25. Cost is $50 per shooter. The banquet is Sept. 1. For more information, please call Fred Manske at (262) 639-3848.
