The Carthage College softball team swept a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader from Wheaton (Ill.) Thursday, taking the first game 5-0 and the second game 8-1 at Kenosha.
In the first game, the Lady Reds scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, two on a double by Kari Peterson, to support the two-hit pitching of Kelsey Epping. Stephanie Noel and Nikki Soreng each singled in a run in the inning. Epping (10-2) struck out seven and didn't walk a batter and pitched to just two batters over the minimum.
In the second game, the offense struck early for Carthage (16-6, 5-3 CCIW) with five runs in the top of the first inning. Peterson hit a one-out, bases-loaded double to drive in two runs, Alyssa Schrader singled home another run and after reloading the bases, Soreng hit a two-run single to knock Wheaton starter Mandy Brockman out after 1/3 of an inning. The Lady Reds added three more runs in the top of the seventh on Schrader's three-run home run, her third of the season. Schrader went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Peterson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Carthage also turned a triple play in the nightcap. With runners on second and third for Wheaton (10-14, 0-4) in the fifth inning, Stephanie Noel made a tumbling catch of a soft liner in center field, threw to second baseman Meghan Roman to double up one runner and Roman threw to third baseman Stephanie Hueramo for the third out. Allie Benthusen (6-4) got the victory.
