Local colleges: Parkside men shut out in soccer

The UW-Parkside men's soccer team had a night to forget Friday at Edwardsville, Ill., losing 5-0 to SIU-Edwardsville in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game.

Matt Harris and Dustin Attarian scored two goals each for the Cougars (4-1-1, 4-0-1 GLVC), who outshot the Rangers 11-8.

Former Prairie School standout Jaime Lieberman played the entire game in goal for the Rangers and made two saves.

Thao Johnson had three shots on goal for the Rangers (6-3, 2-3 GLVC).

Women's soccer

UW-PARKSIDE: The Rangers matched SIU-Edwardsville in shots on goal - both teams had nine - but the Cougars made three first-half goals stand up in a 3-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory at Edwardsville, Ill.

Jenny Kates, Jennifer Kratzer and Kate Yearian scored in the first half for the Cougars (4-3-1, 3-2 GLVC).

Brittany Kaim scored Parkside's goal at the 56:01 mark, off an assist by Meredith Novak. The Rangers outshot the Cougars 6-3 in the second half, but were able to convert on just the one goal.

Women's volleyball

UW-PARKSIDE: Kristin Schmidt had 13 kills and Katie Krohn had 27 assists to lead UW-Parkside to a 30-19, 30-24, 30-17 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Kentucky Wesleyan in the DeSimone Gymnasium on the Parkside campus in Somers.

Jennifer Johnson (Horlick) had 11 kills and Jacqui Brandenburg added 10 for the Rangers (8-4,

2-4 GLVC). Jackie Nehls had a team-high 18 digs.

Erin Krodel led Wesleyan (3-10, 0-5) with seven kills.

CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds beat Lakeland College 30-22, 18-30, 30-25, 30-14 and the University of Chicago 30-16, 30-16, 30-19 to start 2-0 in the Wheaton Invitational. Carthage, Wheaton and North Central are tied for the lead at 2-0 each going into today's play.

Women's golf

CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds placed third in the six-team Carthage Invitational at Bristol Oaks Country Club. Illinois Wesleyan won the meet with a 331 total, while Carthage scored 355.

Carthage was led by Shanna Agner, who was third with an 81. Teammate Kelly Lazar tied for sixth with an 83. Amy Binstein shot 93 and Sarah Jung and Katie Ramirez shot 98s.

Diana Schmidt of UW-Whitewater was the meet medalist with a 6-over-par 78. Whitewater sophomore Emily Kuiper, the former Case High School standout, shot an 82 and tied for fourth.
