The Carthage College baseball team pulled out a close one Friday.

Mario Perez pitched a five-hitter and withstood two unearned runs in the Red Men's 3-2 victory over Illinois Wesleyan in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin game at Bloomington, Ill.

The victory, the 12th straight for Carthage (16-4, 9-0 CCIW), was the first game of a three-game series.

Mike Hughes doubled home a run in the first inning for the Red Men and scored a run in the fourth inning on a throwing error on a bunt by Wesleyan pitcher Pat Kirchhofer. Mike Petti's RBI single in the top of the sixth turned out to be key for Carthage, because in the bottom of the inning, Red Men left fielder Chris D'Angelo dropped a slicing, windblown line drive that allowed two runs to score.

But Perez (3-0) was equal to the challenge, striking out six, including the final batter of the game with a runner on third base.

Hughes and Will Hodges each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

UW-PARKSIDE: The Rangers finally found some offense, but were still swept by Quincy 6-1 and 10-8 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader played at Carthage College in Kenosha.

The games were the home openers for Parkside, but the games had to be moved to Carthage because Red Oberbruner Field on the Parkside campus in Somers was not ready for play.

In the first game, Quincy went up 3-0 in the top of the first inning, the big hit a two-run double. The Hawks scored three more in the top of the sixth on an RBI triple, RBI double and RBI single. Parkside's lone run came on a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth by Brad Lierman, who went 2-for-4. Dave Watson and Robert Bellish also went 2-for-4.

In the second game, the Rangers (4-31, 3-15 GLVC) had 10 hits, but were playing catch-up for most of the game because Quincy (16-17, 9-4) scored six runs in the top of the second inning and led 8-5 after two. Parkside scored twice in the bottom of the sixth on RBI singles by third baseman Kurt Wiegartz and designated hitter Andy Heller to make it 10-8, but could get no closer. Heller went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and second baseman James Dawson went 2-for-2 and scored three runs.
