Local colleges: Lady Reds uphold ranking

The Carthage College women's volleyball team continues to dominate opponents.

The Lady Reds needed four games, but beat Millikin 30-21, 27-30, 30-20, 30-24 Saturday in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin match at Kenosha.

Carthage, ranked 10th in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association/SCTV NCAA Division III poll, had 14 kills from Ashley Kuehl and nine from Rachel Swoboda as it improved to 17-2 overall and 2-0 in the CCIW.

Kelly Bauer had 29 assists and Katie Lundgren had 19 digs for the Lady Reds, who had a team hitting percentage of .188.

Millikin is 14-4 and 2-2.

UW-PARKSIDE: The Rangers had an off day, hitting just .132 in a 30-18, 30-17, 30-24 loss to Drury in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at Springfield, Mo.

Margot DePaepe had 10 kills to lead UW-Parkside (8-6, 2-6 GLVC), Jacqui Brandenburg had eight and Horlick High School graduate Jennifer Johnson had seven.

Katie Krohn had 23 assists and Jackie Nehls had 15 digs.

Court Hendrickson led Drury (9-8, 3-5) with 12 kills.

Cross country

CARTHAGE: The Red Men finished ninth and the Lady Reds finished 23rd at the Roy Griak Invitational held at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn.

Carthage scored 280 points and was led by Michael White, who was 25th in 26:45.60 for 8,000 meters, and Michael Bubolz, who was 30th in 26:51.70. UW-La Crosse won the 34-team NCAA Division III meet with 53 points. Tyler Sigl of UW-Platteville won the race in 25:20.90.

In the women's race, Karen Jackson had the best finish for Carthage in the meet, taking 47th in 24:22.40 for 6,000 meters. Washington (Mo.) won the 42-team meet and Becca Jordahl of UW-River Falls won the race in 25:29.00.
