The rest of the Wisconsin State Golf Association Junior Boys Championship field looks like it will be chasing Mike Sorenson over the next two days.

Sorenson, who led Hartland Arrowhead to the WIAA Division 1 state title in June, shot a 7-under-par 65 Monday at The Bog in Saukville and has a seven-stroke lead after the first round of the three-day tournament.

Sorenson had nine birdies and two bogeys in his round, carding back-to-back birdies three times.

Four players shot even-par 72 and are tied for second - Cody Strang of Madison, Ben Skogen of Onalaska, Eric Wolfe of Platteville and Nathaniel Strigenz of Fond du Lac. Wolfe matched Sorenson on the front nine with a 33.

The top local players in the field are Adam Vanderheyden of Racine and Eric Dankle of Burlington, both of whom shot 74s and are tied for 11th. Also in the top 50 is Robbie Jacobsen of Racine, who shot a 77 and is tied for 33rd.

The four finalists from the Mike Bencriscutto Junior Masters struggled in the first round. The top player of the four is 16-and-under runner-up R.J. Budd of Prairie du Sac, who shot a 76 and is tied for 26th. Alex Gaugert of Lake Geneva, the 18-and-under champion, shot 78 and is tied for 38th.

BROWN DEER WOMEN'S AMATEUR: Jordyn Wyzgowski of Racine, a senior-to-be at Prairie, shot a 6-over-par 79 and is tied for fifth in the championship flight going into the second and final round of the Badger Mutual Brown Deer Women's Amateur Golf Tournament at Brown Deer Park in Brown Deer.

Jaclyn Shepard of the Legend at Brandybrook leads the tournament after a 72 and Elena Vukmir of Muskego Lakes Country Club is second at 73.
