The UW-Parkside men's golf team held its own at The Jewell, a two-day tournament which concluded Sunday at the par-72 Cherry Blossom Course in Georgetown, Ky.
Behind Bob Tierney, who finished fourth in the 100-player field with a 6-under-par 138, the Rangers finished eighth among the 20 teams with a 584. Ferris State won with a 565.
Tierney, who had rounds of 70 and 68, finished five strokes behind champion Kurt Valley of Ferris State. Other Parkside results were Andy Hansen, who tied for 34th (74-73-147), Andrew Troyanek, who tied for 41st (73-76-149), Keith Buntrock, who tied for 49th
(75-75-150), and Mike Keller, who tied for 75th (78-76-154).
Track and field
UW-PARKSIDE: Hope Christie and Missy Nilles each won events at Saturday's Elmhurst Invitational. Christie won the 3,000-meter run with a career-best time of 10:30.4 and Nilles won the pole vault with a mark of 10 feet.
Christie was followed to the finish line by teammate Heidi Ertl, who was second (10:47.2). Brittany Glassburn was second in the 1,500 (2:27.35).
Also scoring for Parkside were Whitney Olson, who was fifth in the 1,500 (5:10.12), and Jennie Kindt, who was sixth in the 800 (2:27.35).
In the men's meet, Parkside was led by Robert Meyers, who was third in the 3,000 steeplechase with a career-best time of 10:14.7.
Rob Hansen was fifth in the 400 (52.30) and Alex Mena was fifth in the 800 (1:59.47). Bryan McLoone placed sixth in the 1,500 with a career-best 4:10.97.
n Le'erin Voss covered his first 20-kilometer race walk Sunday with a time of 1:52.44 Her time was shy of the USA National Championships qualifying standard of 1:50.00
Erika Lamp competed in her first race walk and earned a qualifying mark when she covered 5,000 meters in 28:25.
Parkside coach Mike De Witt was the first men's finisher, covering 10 kilometers in 56:25
CARTHAGE: The Carthage women opened their outdoor season Friday and Saturday by placing second in the North Central College First Chance Invitational at Naperville, Ill. The Lady Reds finished with 201.5 points - nine behind champion North Central.
Scoring victories for Carthage were Shacuana Gaines in the triple jump (34-10 1/2), Ashley Johnson in the 1,500-meter run (4:51.34), Heather Gilmore in the 100 high hurdles (15.31) and Julia Hiett in the 400 intermediate hurdles (1:10.02).
In the men's meet, Carthage placed third with 127 points. Spencer Williams won the discus (135-3) and finishesd third in the shot put (47-7 3/4). Jon Kochmit won the hammer throw (161-1), Josh Brennan finished second in that event (157-6) and Klayton Reed was second in the 800 (1:57.88).
Men's tennis
CARTHAGE: The Red Men lost to the University of Chicago 6-3 Sunday in a nonconference match at Kenosha. Carthage's Jack Schiro defeated Garrett Brinker 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Also winning for the Red Men were Sammy Ramoni at No. 2 singles and Matt Whiteside at No. 4.
Baseball
CARTHAGE: The Red Men's CCIW scheduled game against Millikin Sunday at Carthage was postponed because of inclement weather. No makeup date has been scheduled yet.
