The UW-Parkside women's cross country team finished a distant second at the 29th annual Midwest Open, which was held Saturday at Parkside's Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course. The Rangers finished with 74 points - 32 behind champion Marquette University. Azusa Pacific of California was third with 95.
Parkside was led by Jessica Lamp, who covered the five-kilometer course in 17:40, just three seconds off the winning pace. Rachelle Malette of Wayne State won in 17:36 and Marquette's Cassie Peller was second in 17:39.
Other Parkside finishers were Naomi Fulton (sixth in 17:45), Valerie Hubbard (14th in 18:38), Heidi Anderson (32nd in 19:08).
Lamp and Fulton's finishes marked only the second time in the history of Parkside's program that two runners finished in less than 18 minutes on their home course. Sisters Michelle and Nancy Rohl accomplished the feat in 1987.
In the men's race, Parkside placed 13th in the 19-team meet with 400 points. Edinboro (Pa.) won the team championship with 74.
Aron Rono of Azusa Pacific won the eight-kilometer race with a time of 24:07. Parkside's best finish was by Ben Orvold, who was 63rd in 26:55. Orvold's brother, Chris, was 64th in 26:59.
Other Parkside runners were Dustin Baldwin (120th in 28:09), Bryan McCloone (131st in 28:37), Rob Hansen (153rd in 29:00) and Robert Meyers (155th in 29:02).
CARTHAGE: The Red Men opened their season by finishing 15th at St. Olaf's Skoglund Athletic Fields in Northfield, Minn., with 372 points. UW-La Crosse won the 27-team event with 83 points, followed in the top three by UW-Platteville (105) and Iowa Central Community College (108).
Women's golf
CARTHAGE: Shanna Agner shot an 11-over-par 83 and was tied for 38th in leading Carthage in the first round of the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Golf Classic at Normal, Ill.
Kelly Lazar shot 85 (tied for 54th) and Sarah Jung shot 88 (tied for 76th) for the Lady Reds, who are 17th in the team standings.
Former Case High School standout Emily Kuiper, a sophomore at UW-Whitewater, shot a 79 and was tied for 11th.
Katie Tewell of Franklin College and Jess Dooley of Southern Indiana were tied for first at 73.
Women's volleyball
UW-PARKSIDE: Jacqui Brandenburg had a team-high eight kills to lead Parkside to its first Great Lakes Valley Conference victory of the season, a 30-20, 30-26, 30-23 defeat of Bellarmine at Louisville, Ky.
Katie Krohn had a team-high 25 assists and Jackie Nehls had 13 digs for the Rangers (7-4 overall, 1-4 GLVC).
Chelsea Bibelhauser led Bellarmine (3-8, 1-3 GLVC) with 11 kills.
