Akaila Cabell is back on track - literally and figuratively.

Cabell, a former Case High School track standout, saw her promising running career at the University of Wisconsin brought to a screeching halt in fall when she tore the posterior cruciate ligament in her right knee.

"I was riding a moped and I must have fish-tailed and fell off," Cabell said.

The injury forced Cabell to miss the entire indoor portion of her sophomore season and delayed her development, much to her and Badgers coach Jim Stintzi's dismay.

Stintzi was ecstatic to have successfully recruited Cabell two years ago after she finished her high school career by winning the 100- and 400-meters at the WIAA Division 1 state meet.

Stinzi was also pleased by Cabell's showing last season as a freshman when she placed fifth in the 60-meters at the Big Ten Conference indoor championship and ran a leg on the Badgers' 4x400-meter relay that placed second in the Big Ten outdoor championship,

"We were thinking she was really going to have a big year," Stinzi said. "But then she had that accident on the moped. That was sort of devastating for her and us. That put her pretty far behind. But she's bounced back. She's a hard worker and she's really motivated and focused."

Cabell is also competing in a different event. While she concentrated on the 100- and 200-meters last season, Cabell and Stintzi mutually agreed it was in Cabell's best interest to run the 400.

She competed in the event in Wisconsin's last two meets and had a personal-best time of 56.47 in the Mt. San Antonio College Relays at Walnut, Calif, earlier this month.

Cabell, who has a 3.5 grade point average with majors in psychology and zoology, firmly believes her career is back on track.

"It's coming along great," Cabell said of her transition to the 400. "I really didn't train for it (the 400) in high school and I still had pretty good success. I think with the proper training I could really be good at it."

So does Stintzi.

"I think she can become an impact runner in the 400," Stinzi said. "She definitely can do that in the Big Ten. There's quite a bit of potential there."
